The European Super League quickly unraveled over a period of 48 hours as all six Premier League teams withdrew from the proposed venture. Clubs and owners issued apologies to their fans for the ill thought initiative. Repercussions such as potential penalties to be levied against the renegade clubs by the Premier League or UEFA remain to be seen. Additional damages may also be demanded by the European Super League against those members defecting from a legal agreement. Fan backlash against club owners was in evidence Thursday when Manchester United fans organized at the team’s Carrington training ground to demand the ouster of the Glazer family as owners. Overshadowed by the Super League controversy were announced changes Monday to the Champions League which included expansion of the competition from 32 to 36 teams and the elimination of the group stage concept. The changes, scheduled to go into effect with the 2024/25 season, are already rumored to be under reassessment for possible adjustment.
